July 3rd for most of the country is a day of preparation and travel for the Fourth of July. However, in the U.S. Virgin Islands the celebrations begin early. Emancipation Day is a very important part of our culture worth understanding.
We’ve already kicked off “Freedom Week” and this July 3rd, we’re celebrating the 175th Anniversary of when the enslaved people of the territory gained their emancipation after 177 years of Danish rule.
Good Morning! St. John is undeniably a special place, with aspects that are so captivating, they resonate with the entire community, locals and tourists alike. There are also incredible memories that are unique and have special meaning to individuals, families, and friends. We encourage you to take a moment, step away from the noise of every day life, and read a story submitted from a guest contributor while you reflect on the time you’ve spent on St. John over the years.
If St. John were to have a mascot, the sea turtle would be a great candidate!
Those who have explored the waters of beaches like Maho and Salt Pond Bay know it’s not uncommon to see many sea turtles at once.
National Sea Turtle Day is June 16th.

Good Morning! It’s hard to believe we’re almost halfway through 2023! It seems like it was just yesterday we were writing about New Year’s Eve festivities on St. John and reflecting back on 2022.
At the beginning of the year, we brought on a few new writers to contribute to News of St. John. We’ve had overwhelmingly positive feedback from readers on the new content being published to the site. Our team has shared stories on a plethora of topics, everything from the history of Trunk Bay, to the sale of Epstein Island, to the music and art scene on St. John. And of course, more practical articles to give readers tips on new transportation options, restaurant openings, activities and events, and more.
Good Morning! New transportation options in the VI are always appealing to locals and tourists. We hit on a few new ones in an article in April offering service to St. Croix, Anegada, and Virgin Gorda. Today, we’re digging a little further into Fly The Whale, an airline service offering frequent and affordable flights between St. Thomas and St. Croix.

Good Morning! If you’re a frequent traveler to St. John, you know how difficult it can be to get to our little slice of paradise. After a flight to St. Thomas (or multiple depending on where you’re coming from), you’re probably looking forward to some sunshine with a painkiller in hand, and the last thing you want to do is MORE travel.
Unfortunately, to get to St. John you still need to deal with the sometimes hectic St. Thomas airport, meander through other travelers to find a taxi, then get on a ferry to take you over to St. John. When you do finally arrive, you then sometimes need to continue to wait amongst a sea of other tired passengers until your bag is removed from the ferry. Good morning! A new technology called ChatGPT has recently emerged that allows you to ask an AI chat bot to answer questions or complete various tasks. All you do is type your question or command into the chat box and then watch the AI go to work. In a matter of seconds you will have your answer or completed task. It’s really amazing to think about how far technology has come!
We decided to do a fun little experiment to put ChatGPT to the test. We asked ChatGPT to sing a song about St. John US Virgin Islands. The result… MINDBLOWN!

Happy Friday! When the sun sets on St. John, there are plenty of places to eat, drink, sing, and dance the night away in Cruz Bay. Lunch options during the day however… much more limited. That’s why we were thrilled to learn that Lovango Rum Bar, which serves hands down some of the best pizza and craft cocktails on Island, is opening for lunch starting Monday, April 3rd.
