St. John teen wins VI photo contest

Island_time Tristan Ewold of St. John has been named a winner of the Virgin Island's ‘Share My USVI’ photography contest sponsored by the Department of Tourism.

His picture, Island Time, was chosen as the best in the category of submissions from 14- to 17-year-olds.  Ewold wins a $2,000 Savings Bond.

He is in the 11th grade at St. John’s Gifft Hill School. He has taken photography classes with Steve Simonsen, who Tristan credits with “setting him on the right track” with photography. Though he’s not quite sure whether he wants to be a professional photographer, he does think it will be an ongoing side project. His winning photo was taken while awaiting his turn in a video production class at Maho Bay with Simonsen. His favorite subjects are his friends, and pal Justin is featured in the shot.

The contest drew more than 1,000 entries and some 2,000 votes were cast by the public.

Overall winner Garvin Powell is a born-and-bred Crucian completing his last year of college with the Art Institute of San Diego, where he is a photography major. He hopes to become a professional commercial or fashion photographer. His winning photo, Festival, was captured last year during the St. Croix Crucian Christmas Festival.

The winning photos can all be seen at www.ShareMyUSVI.com.
