Playing ball for Ruby

The 13th annual Ruby Rutnik Softball Tournament will be played this weekend.  Money raised from the two day event goes to fund scholarships in the memory of Ruby Rutnik, daughter of long-time St. John residents Janet Cook-Rutnik and Andy Rutnik

Ruby died in 1996, in a car accident, while studying at American University in Washington DC.  The tournament raises money through sales of sponsorships of innings and T-shirts. The Rutniks expect to award four scholarships worth $2,500 this year.

The contests begin Friday at the Winston Wells ball field in Cruz Bay.  In the opening game of St. Thomas’ Antilles School will play the St. John All Star team in the 6 p.m. game.  A second game will feature St. Croix’s Central High School against Tortola’s Elmore Stoutt High School.  The championship game is scheduled for Saturday evening.
