Just in time for next Christmas may well be the best way to describe the U.S. Mint’s release of a 25-cent coin honoring the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The agency said it will issue six quarters for the District of Colombia and five territories. DC’s coin will be released late in January, with the additional coins will be issued in approximately two-month intervals. The VI coin is the fifth in the series, which would indicate it will be available in late September.
The VI design was developed by a review committee established by Gov. John deJongh. The Secretary of the Treasury approved the design in late July.
Its design features each of the Virgin Isl ands, with a Banana Quit (the official bird), a yellow cedar (the official flower), and Tyre Palm, a tree native to the VI. “United in Pride and Hope,” the territory’s official motto, is included in the design.
