Thanks for this angle of the island Jenn. It appears the south shore has greened up quicker than other parts of the island. One thought from your videos, how do we take this opportunity to clean up the island? I have been visiting STJ for almost 10 years and you will see the same vacant cars along side of the road. Can these vehicles be scrapped for metal along with other hurricane debri?
Honestly, I do know not what is happening with all of the debris. The government has asked people to sort it into specific piles and leave it near the road, and then they will pick it up. I am not certain what happens after that.
Hey Jenn we are on St thomas and we’re wondering if we take the ferry over to St. John is there a way to get to the beaches? Are any beaches open? Thanks!
Good morning,
Typically there are taxis waiting at the ferry dock, although I cannot guarantee that they will be there. Hawksnest is the closets beach that is ok. The others have a large amount of debris still or have bad water quality.
May I ask where you are staying?
Thank you Jenn for this view. I held my breath nearly the entire time. The south side looks quite green. Our street is 9.31 minutes into the video. The view from the road is still spectacular.
Hi Jenn,
Thanks for my Sunday drive! I rarely go out that way since I’m such a Coral Bay girl. I understand why people love it out there. Beautiful.
PS: Were those your tires squealing? Do we need to do a fundraiser for new tires?
Thanks again!
Haha, that lovely squealing noise was actually my brakes. I am getting them replaced next week. New tires too. Have to have the Jeep in tip top shape, so we can resume our News of St. John Tours when the time is right! 🙂
Take it to Bill’s
Gotta say, I’ve been yelling about how I want to work with a volunteer group to clean up debris, but it looks like you have a good handle on that. I’m still coming to help, but I would like to be part of a group. I wish there was a volunteer page on Love for Love City.
My latest question is this: Did the tree frogs make it through? Those little guys one of my favorite parts of STJ.
Thanks!
Yes, they sure did! I heard my first one around 6 p.m. on September 6th, the day Irma hit. Within an hour, there was a lovely chorus.
First, I want to echo the abundant gratitude for these video’s, as well as all the other info you are sharing on this site.
Wondering if you plan to continue to take the go-pro out on these little jaunts around the island? I cannot tell you how helpful it would be to see the progress that occurs over time. Even if only once a month, it would be so reassuring to see fewer downed lines, less debris, more leaves and limbs sprouting out, etc.
Also heartened to hear that there is a relative army of folks just itching for the go ahead to come down and start volunteering. So much to do, and gratefully, so many people who are wanting to pitch in. Thank you to all for every little bit of help towards the recovery effort.
This vivid depiction of the hurricane carnage is saddening, Thank you so much for allowing me to visit, once again, the very spot on earth I love the most. Blessings and Godspeed to all
I can’t thank you enough for this video. My wife and I are part time residents and the video goes right by our house at the entrance to Fish Bay where Marina Drive begins. As you can see in the video, the house just before ours was reduced to rubble that is now mostly stacked along the side of the road. A house 100 feet up the hill above me was also destroyed along with several others in Fish Bay. By the grace of God, the great design work of Michael Milne and the incredible construction job done by Jonathan Doran, my house sustained only minor damage.
Despite the damage visible in the video I was glad to see the greenery returning, the restoration work going on and my home still standing. Thank you!! And God bless the people of St. John.
Thanks so much for allowing us to see what’s happening – for those of us that only get to come every few years – it helps to see what the damage looks like & the progress being made – first hand. Would so very much like to come & help – wish retirement was closer! 4-5 more years away!
Thanks again! Blessings for better days ahead!
