Bargain hunters score in St. John auction

The 2nd annual Friends of the VI National Park online auction successfully wrapped up over the weekend.  A statement from the group said the event raised $28,001.

"We are thrilled," said Heather Rusham, development director. The take was almost twice last year's $15,000 and well above the Friends' goal for this year, $25,000.

Among the 44 items offered during the two-week online auction were vacation stays on St. John, St. Croix, and Mexico.  There were also a number of activities on the water including sailing and kayaking.  A total of 199 bids were received and 95 percent of the items drew offers.

However, there was a lot of bargain hunting.  No item went for more than its value.

Sailing Among the best deals made by buyers:

  • Three nights at Caneel Bay:  Value $3,000, Sold for $2,600 (-13%)
  • Sunset cruise and snorkel trip on the Sadie Sea:  Value $1,300  Sold for $450 (-65%)
  • 7 night sailing charter for 6- 8 people: Value $7,000  Sold for $3,500  (-50%)

Moral of the story: watch for the auction next year.  Good Holiday shopping opportunity.
