The 18th Annual Beach to Beach Power Swim Brings Veterans Back to St. John

The 18th Annual Beach to Beach Power Swim Brings Veterans Back to St. John 1

Good Morning, Good Morning!  This weekend is one of my absolute favorite community events on St. John.  The Beach to Beach Power Swim, hosted by Friends of Virgin Islands National Park, brings hundreds of swimmers to the beautiful waters of VINP every year for a race in the incredible waters along St. John’s North Shore Beaches.  The proceeds from the volunteer supported race benefits many marine programs sponsored by Friends VINP and the Community Learn to  Swim Program.

Each year in May, hundreds of residents and visitors gather at the starting gate at Maho Bay in support and celebration of these amazing programs dedicated to keeping the surrounding waters of St. John beautiful and teaching community members and children how to love safely being in the water.  And, each year, Wounded Warriors join these supporters on the beach to participate in the multi level race with finish lines at Cinnamon, Trunk and Hawksnest.

Island Update: Sunday Rain brings May Flowers!

Island Update: Sunday Rain brings May Flowers! 3

Well, it’s official.  This weekend, someone’s rain dance or water delivery or clothes on the line worked fantastically well.  Because Sunday morning we woke up to the hammering of rain on the metal roof, isolated sounds of thunder, a canceled half day charter and rolling power outages.  It POURED all day long and accumulation rose over an inch in one day!  Which is fantastic news, considering that earlier this month the NOAA declared that the territory was officially in a severe drought.  And the browning hillsides reinforced that proclamation with visual evidence.

Good Morning, Good Morning – Virgin Islands History and Culture

Good Morning, Good Morning - Virgin Islands History and Culture 6

Good Morning, Good Morning!  If you have ever been in a place of business in the Virgin Islands, you may have been bewildered at a behavior slightly unique to this incredible place and its culture.  I remember, in my early years on St. John, standing in what seemed to be an endless line at First Bank each week.  Every single person who walked through the door uttered the words, “Good morning, Good morning.”  And,in turn, each person in line, and behind the busy counter, voiced a similar response.  I found it to be a bit odd at first.  But after a few months, I found it to be comforting and inclusive and realized that I received a much kinder (and helpful!) response to my queries and questions as I went about my days adopting, and adapting to, this beautiful habit.

In this award winning short film from Wonder Lab Films, the documentary makers explore the “history and culture of the people of the Virgin and their inspiring culture of coexistence.”  And it begins, and ends, with one VERY simple thing that we can all do ” to adapt to one another and that acts as a bridge between people learning to understand and accept each other.”

“This cultural exploration on the people of the Virgin Islands may be my greatest documentary to date, but the experience of seeing life through these incredible human beings perspective has lifted my spirit in a way I never thought possible.” – Michael Anton

The Legend of Carval Rock

The Legend of Carval Rock 8

Good Morning!  If you have ever been on a boat in the waters of the USVI between St. Thomas and St. John, you will likely have noticed the strikingly rugged rock formation just off the eastern tips of Lovango and Congo Cays (pronounced KEYS).  Present day, this particular rock is a great photo op, dive site and, for the dare devils out there, an advanced cliff jumping stop.  But, what many people don’t know is the legend behind this distinctive and sharp rock that has likely made its way into the foreground of your sunset photos….

COVID Update- Mask Mandates and Travel Testing Requirements Still In Place 10

Good Afternoon!  I hope that you all had a great weekend and are getting into this work week bursting with positivity and productivity! I did not get a post up earlier this morning because I thought there might be a decent amount to update after Governor Bryan’s press conference this afternoon.  Unfortunately, there aren’t many changes to report on, but it sound like, with additional guidance in the future from the CDC, there could be on the horizon!

Hi all!  Here’s a little feel good piece for you about an artistically talented fourth grade student from St. Croix.  Annually, Google hosts a competition that challenges K-12 students to create artwork in line with a theme and a winner is selected from each of the 54 United States’, possessions and territories.  The grand prize for one of these aspiring young artists who makes it to the finals is the opportunity for their work to be featured on the Google landing page….And a sizeable scholarship!  The winner of the USVI Doodle for Google Competition this year, with the theme being “I am strong, because…,” is fourth grader Armani Harvey from Pearl B.Larsen PreK-8 school on St. Croix.

Love City Car Ferries Has an App!

Love City Car Ferries Has an App! 13

Love City Car Ferries, Inc., the locally owned and operated company that owns and operates the Vic and Grand Vic car barges between Red Hook and Cruz Bay, launched an app this week that may make things a bit easier on the passage between Love City and Rock City!  I know that this post won’t apply to a lot of you because MANY of you rent your cars on St. John while you’re here and don’t have to hassle with the car barge.

But for those of you who were not able to find a rental on St. John, and for those of us that live here and need to head to St. Thomas for grocery runs, doctors appointments and/or flights out, this app looks like it will make things a bit easier in the realm of navigating the sometimes unpredictable car barge schedule.
