A VI quarter for your thoughts

2009-Virgin-Islands

The U.S. Mint has released the Virgin Islands quarter.  You can order some from the Mint here.

It is the fifth coin released in the 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program. Each 2-roll set consists of 80 quarters: 1 roll of 40 coins with the “P” mint mark for Philadelphia and 1 roll of 40 coins with the “D” mint mark for Denver.

The design for the coin was approved by a committee appointed by the VI governor and after public online voting on three proposed drawings.

One side of the Virgin Islands quarter depicts the outline of the three major islands; the Yellow Breast or Bananaquit, its official bird; the Yellow Cedar or Yellow Elder, the official flower; and a Tyre Palm Tree.

It also features the inscriptions U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS and United in Pride and Hope, the official motto of the territory, while the other side of the coin to features the familiar image of President George Washington. These coins are available for purchase in 100-coin bags, 1000-coin bags and a 2-roll set
