One view: Recession’s been good for St. John

The new Principal Planner for St. John seems to be a "glass is half full" kind of guy.

In an interview with the St. John Source, Stuart Smith said, "Now that things have slowed down" there is now "a good chance to get a grip on things."

In other words, with Sirenusa dead in the water and commercial development sort of(!) in a lull, maybe there's time to take a look at how the island wants to grow without the pressure of deadlines and bankers and investors to get projects up and running.

Talking with the Source's Lynda Lohr, the 30-year-old Planner said he wants to hear ideas from everybody.  He knows more parking in Cruz Bay is critical, but just having a place to put your car isn't enough.  He agrees with many who say a shuttle service is necessary because Enighed Pond is … well, it's a walk. Enighed is where there are plans for 150 parking spaces.

Smith's office at the Marketplace is not yet ready.  He can be reached by e-mail at [email protected]
