Seems like they want to off this bulk of the overcrowded cruz bay area properties quickly. Vi Legislature just announced they have approved new zoning laws to grant a ritzy hotel resort and marina to finally be built in Coral bay the new hot spot for the rich. It seems that this gem of a island is going the way of Saint Barts much sooner than later. The middle class vacationers are being pushed out and will have no affordable where to vacation on Saint John except for the Campgrounds.
St. John will never rival St. Barts. The government of St. Barts follows their zoning laws which the VI government does not. Only when the US federal government gets involved (i.e. Coral Bay marina) will statutes and codes be followed. Gustavia was developed properly and to scale with its surroundings. Can’t say the same about Cruz Bay. In my opinion, the Grand Bay & Sirenusa projects are a sight for sore eyes and have forever ruined the peaceful harmony of Cruz Bay. In the VI’s it’s simple, a developer wants something bad enough they just pay, get the land rezoned, make donations for good press and promise jobs. We have all heard and seen that routine before. In terms of a hot spots for the rich, it’s going on all over the world, NYC, SF, London, Harbour Island, Washington, DC, Miami and not just St. John.
