One of the things that makes St. John such a unique island is – er, was! – the Fork in the Road near the Gifft Hill School. You just smile every time you drive past it.
Shaped like a dinner fork, the concrete sculpture had been standing for almost 25 years. It was erected by a neighborhood resident as a way to alert workmen so they could find her location and job site.
The Fork was knocked down, or fell down, late last week.
The St. John Source quoted Martha Toomey saying the incident doesn't look right. "It doesn't look like a car did it," she told the Source, "It kind of looks like somebody did it on purpose."
Another resident said it would take a lot of force to knock the fork off its base. Accident or vandalism?
Sounds like forkin vandalism to me.
Sad.My brother, Steve, put up the first fork in the road about 25 years ago, when he lived on Gift Hill. Hopefully someone will replace it.
Does anyone have a picture of the original fork in the road that I saw in 1988?
