Longtime readers know that News of St. John began as a not-so-subtle effort to encourage rentals of our home on the island. There's a lot of competition for rentals and I thought the site would help. It has. It is the oldest and largest Web site with news about St. John.
So it was with surprise and gratitude that, while mousing around TripAdvisor.com the other day, I found that Blue Tang was ranked as the #2 most popular rental on the island, with a 4 1/2 out of 5 stars ranking, too. Shocked … thankful … happy.
Blue Tang ranked so well because of the reviews people who have stayed at the house were kind enough to post. A few of their comments:
- "A peaceful, relaxing, romantic honeymoon at Blue Tang."
- "Blue Tang rocks."
- "Best vacation we've ever taken."
- "Awesome views and location."
I have to admit that each time we visit Blue Tang and read through the Guest Books, we are often moved to tears at the kind things people say about the house as they recount the wonderful time they had on the island and at our place.
If you're headed for St. John, I hope you'll consider our home, too.

And the question that begs to be asked, What was #1?
Congratulations on Blue Tang! It’s beautiful!!
Photos of your hilltop views gives my workday an “Aaahhhh” moment each day!
As I remember, #1 was a four-bedroom property at Peter Bay.
You got my vote for #1.
Blue tang has always been our #1 choice!!! Unfortunately it was booked this time when we wanted it! We need to book earlier if we are to get blue tang next time!!!
Congratulations! Blue Tang IS truly beautiful. As a 15 year traveler to St. John, I love the island. I know you know many people there and have one message. I want to keep coming..I want to be able to afford it. The rest of the US has gone through a deflation of sorts, along with incomes unfortunately. I wish, as I know many on St. John wish, that it wasn’t the case, but it is. Is there no more room on the island where economically minded families can stay and not be in a tent camp? I love the island, I will never be a camper. I’ve chosen your island at times when other islands were cheaper. When money was easier to come by, I stayed loyal, even through the inflation of prices over the last decade, I’ve been loyal. After the recession hit and I had to collect change to get there, I stayed there. I’ve stayed through the storms and the hurricanes this summer. It would be a sad state of affairs if only the “haves” can stay here. Please don’t push me off. Find a way to stay current with folks like me and my family, who truly love the place and take care if it as our own when we are fortunate enough to get there. Please pass this on. I know rental owners have to stay afloat, but not everyone paid for their property on the 2000-2010 decade boom and are a slave to their mortgage down there. We were there for you. When will you be there for those of us? Sorry, I get a little passionate about St. John, as I am sure you do. It would be a sad day if I had to turn away from it.
