Here’s everything we know about the fire that’s happening right now in Cruz Bay…
We received a message at 5:50 p.m. which said there was a major fire happening next to Frank Bay on St. John. We immediately hopped in the Jeep and drove over.
When we arrived at 5:56 p.m., a building located next to the substation was fully engulfed in flames. I spoke with Ernest, the fire chief, and he stated that the building has diesel fuel in it; therefore his firefighters were unable to fight it at that time. He also stated that whatever caused the fire began in St. Thomas, and traveled to St. John via the underground cable that comes into Cruz Bay in the Frank Bay area, igniting the building.
We just read this statement on the VI Source’s Facebook page:
“Virgin Islands Water & Power Authority’s Jean Greaux confirmed it is a transformer near the sub station near Cruz bay that is on fire.”
Here is a map of the location and a video of the fire:
This is everything that we can confirm at this point. We will keep you all posted.
I hope this fire gets under control soon. Does the substation relay power to Cruz Bay residents and businesses? Please keep us informed as to new developments. Thanks, Jenn
Please keep me posted on the fire.
Thank ou
Oh that doesn’t sound good. I hope whatever started that fire didn’t damage the cable.
We are flying down on the 14th. Hope this gets straightened out by then. Can the island run on the one remaining substation?
It is supposed to be fixed tonight.
