Time to Help Our Asses

We haven’t had measurable rain here in months. Our hillsides are crunchy and our cisterns are empty. The lack of rain has definitely taken its toll and now it’s begun to considerable affect out island animals – specifically the donkeys – and they need our help.

Because of the draught, the donkeys’ food and water supply has simply dried up. Many are now over in the area of Caneel Bay where Oriel Smith, Caneel’s director of grounds and landscaping, cares for them. Oriel is a treasured resident here on island and works tirelessly to care for the donkeys, but because of the draught, it’s difficult for him to keep up. It’s also costly.

Oriel estimates that it costs roughly $50 a day to feed 10 donkeys, which he pays for himself. But now, because of the drought, Oriel has around 24 donkeys to care for, which is very expensive. We’re asking anyone who loves the island, particularly our donkeys, to help if you are able. All donations will be used to purchase grain and hay.

Please be sure to write “donkeys” on the memo line of any check sent, whether it be to the ACC or Oriel. If you choose to donate online, please indicate that it’s for the donkeys.
