New Restaurant to Open in Cruz Bay

So we’ve been sitting on this little secret for a couple of weeks now, and we are super excited to tell you all about this today … a new Mexican restaurant is opening in Cruz Bay! Yum!

Viva La Revolution Cantina will open Sunday, June 19th over in Mongoose Junction in the space currently occupied by Virgin Fire. Viva Cantina is being opened by Michael and Barbie Barry, the owners of both Virgin Fire and Sun Dog Cafe. The restaurant will take a fresh approach to all of the aspects of a restaurant. Its menu will consist of genuine Mexican food that’s approachable, authentic and very flavorful. Everything will be made in house from its made to order corn and flour tortillas to its inventive truck stand tacos, Mexican favorites (enchiladas, chile rellenos, fajitas, tamales) and more. The menu will accented by a wide array of tequilas, served in flights, as margaritas or in pitchers for the table that can be paired with the extensive taco menu.

Check out the sample menu:

“We love the flavors of Mexican food and it lends itself so well to sharing experiences, gluten free options, featuring super foods and keeping our sourcing local, with very few exceptions,” Michael Barry wrote on Virgin Fire’s Facebook page. “We will be planting a garden with the supervision of Gifft Hill School’s Earth Program to supplement our sourcing, working with the Roller Farm in Coral Bay (Josephine’s Green Burrito is slated for the menu), our local boat captains and farmers in the US Virgin Islands whenever feasible.”

I’m not sure about all of you, but I’m pretty excited about this.

For those of you looking to dine at Virgin Fire before it closes its doors for good, its last night serving will be Saturday, June 11th. The evening will feature a $25 buffet and live music.

We’ll keep you all posted on the opening of Viva, and we can assure you, we will be one of its first guests!

  1. “Its menu will consist of genuine Mexican food that’s approachable, authentic and very flavorful.”

Just can’t help to ask: What is approachable food?

    • Approachable, for me, means that the ingredients are familiar— as in comfort food.
Combinations of familiar tastes as a base, with tweaks that bring out the best in them.
Menu is still a work in progress, but

      good example:

Carnitas Tacos: Crispy pork, pickled jalapeño, chives, queso fresco, cabbage.
Shredded Beef Tacos: Grilled onions, cojita cheese, chimichurri, cilantro

Mexican cuisine is a simple, homespun thing– our plan is to do it with very high quality. The heart and soul of Viva is the sauces: Roja (red, mild), Salsa Verde (roasted tomatillos, green, mild) and Hot Roja (roasted tomato base, spicy)

We open on Father’s Day, Sunday June 19. Please call 777-3473 for reservations. Thanks!

  2. Good question. My take on it is; approachable as in simple. No goat cheese with walnut tacos. I didn’t study the menu though so maybe i”m wrong.

  3. And if you could offer a vegan cheese alternative such as Daiya for some dishes, all of us dairy free people would love you. There are a few places in the states doing this and it makes it possible to eat Mexican food or any other type in a restaurant.
I was onlly at Virgin Fire once but it was great. so I look forward to this restautant.

  4. Michael we can’t wait. Have been to Virgin Fire numerous times and have always loved the food and staff (hope most are staying) Thanks for your shopping staying local. Mexican on island will be great. menu looks like it will satisfy everyone.
    Thanks for the change.
