Favorite St. John restaurants for January

With winter season in full swing, the buzz around the island is about restaurants, old and new.  You can see comments on the visitor forums such as Trip Advisor and Virgin Islands On-Line.  Here's what they're saying.

"We will be in Cruz Bay Feb. 1st. and plan to walk to restaurants in town. What's good these days?"

"In December we had great meals at Rhumblines, Banana Deck, Cafe Roma, and the Beach Bar."

"Our favorite restaurant in Cruz Bay this trip was Lime Inn."

"We just returned from 10 days in STJ. We stayed at Battery HIll and walked into Cruz Bay for dinner each night. I'd have to say our favorites were Cafe Roma and La Tapa, going twice to both places. We also enjoyed Lime Inn and Rhumblines. Try the Happy Hour at Spy Glass (upstairs near the dock) – we went twice for $3 rum drinks, fish tacos and wings. The new Cactus on Blue, across from the Beach Bar, had very good Mexican also. Enjoy!!"

"Our favorites in April were Spyglass in Wharfside & Ocean Grille in Mongoose Junction. For lunch, The G Spot in Larry's Landing. Great sandwiches & wraps to take to the beach. Can't wait to return in May. Booked our airfare yesterday!! Yeah!!!"

"We have really enjoyed meals and the atmosphere at the Waterfront Bistro, especially at sunset…..watching the ferry come and go, beach activity, boats returning from a day of fun, sunset over STT, and excellent food. Reserve a table by the beach. Of course we have had just as much fun at the Beach Bar:) But one night of fine dinning is romantic and nice."

"I will give another BIG vote for lunch at the G Spot located in Larry's Landing next to Slimman's parking lot. Huge portions, excellent prices, and just darn good food.

"La Plancha del Mar is also in their new spot in Mongoose Junction (in the old Paradiso spot). I highly recommend you give them a try early in the trip, because you will probably want to go more than once! They have a happy hour menu with a selection of $5 appetizers and some really yummy $2 sangria (beer specials too). I think the happy hour is from 5-6pm. Their food is amazing! Definitely one of my favorites.

"I will also put in another vote for La Tapa. I've always loved their food and service. They have been a very 'solid' restaurant for years."

  1. We always love Sweet Plaintains in Coral Bay. Has anyone been there recently? We’ll be in St. John in Feb. and are so looking forward to it.

  2. The lime in has been one of our favorites for years….Rich offers great food, great service, and is very personable, and hands on…always a pleasurable dining experience….keep up the great work!

  3. Dont forget about the BBQ shack, always love that place, and it is good sign that many locals eat there. Not hearing any comments on Morgan’s Mango – has that place gone down hill?

  4. Rich,
We tried Zozo’s on the suggestion by the villa owner that we rented from and were disappointed.
Nice views and wine list, but the food was less than we expected. Best in the Caribbean is a stretch, there are some great restaurants in St Martin and St Barts….

  5. High Tide is good too! Food taste great & reasonable prices. It’s one of our favs. But I love Vie’s Chicken Shack – the best garlic fried chicken – yummy! Eating at a picnic table on the side of the road is not a restaurant – but good all the same. I hope it’s open when I get there in few weeks.
