Would You Like Fries With That?

mcdonaldsSay it isn’t so … McDonald’s is coming to Cruz Bay? I’m not buying it, but here’s what’s going on…

Early Friday morning, an ad popped up on Craigslist for “New McDonalds Seeking Help” and by 9 a.m., I had a ton of emails from you guys asking about it. Here’s a portion of what the ad said:

“McDonalds is opening a new franchise right in the heart of Cruz Bay. Construction is to begin within the month. We are very excited to provide St John with a dearly missed convenience.”

I haven’t heard anything about this, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true. So I did what any good little blogger would do. I emailed them for more info. Here’s their response:

“Thank you so much for expressing interest in our new franchise. My business partners and I are very excited to become a part of the St John community! Our goal is to bring fast, convenient, and high quality food to a market severely lacking. We cannot wait to open the doors and start a new chapter for St John.

“As far as the location is concerned, we are not allowed to disclose it at this time. The building is currently leased, and the landlord is honoring the lease through the month. What I can say, however, is that it will be right in the heart of Cruz Bay. We will begin construction on the property July 1st and expect to be open mid-August.”

Ok, so let’s just say this is true, where could it possibly go? The only place that I could see being feasible is at Joe’s Diner, which is located under Cafe Roma. Its been for sale for quite some time, so you just never know.

And if this does happen, it wouldn’t be the first time St. John had a fast food franchise. There was a Wendy’s over at Wharfside back in the early 90s, but it was destroyed by a fire in 1992 and never reopened. And more recently, there was a Subway over where Across the Street bar now stands.

So what do you all think? Sounds a bit like Palm Tree Charters Express to me. Well that’s because it is. Here’s the real deal…

Actually, I find this amusing. Nice work “Not Stephen Orwell,” nice work.

Mr. News of St. John and I were watching a little TV over the weekend when we came across a show called Private Islands. The show featured Peter Island, so we decided to give it a look.

For those of you unfamiliar with Peter Island, it’s one of the British Virgin Islands located off of St. John’s East End. We’ve been there a few times with our good friend Captain John of Palm Tree Charters. It’s a pretty swanky place.

So there we were watching the show when who happens to show up on the screen … none other than our very own Captain John! Here, take a look…

Super quick, yes, but how cool is that??!!

Gotcha!

news palm treeYou have to admit, yesterday’s story was pretty funny. We wanted to do something to make you all laugh and we knew John Brandi would be game, so we concocted this silly story to trick all of you. Once Captain John got Winsome involved at the Soggy Dollar, we knew it was going to be great!

So we have to ask – How many of you believed us at least for a second?? Let us know below.

Ferry Boat to Serve New Purpose

John Brandi Red Hook 1
So as you all know, the situation with the new ferries has become laughable. The government essentially ordered them without ever consulting the current ferry operators. The current ferry operators own their own boats, so it makes no sense for them to lease them from the government. Delrise Varlack of Varlack Ventures, one of the current ferry boat operators, was even recently quoted as saying the government needed to “get serious” about contract terms.

Well it seems that someone has gotten serious – Captain John Brandi of Palm Tree Charters.

“You know, I was just plain sick and tired of seeing those two beauties docked over there at the sub base in St. Thomas,” Captain John said recently. “So I made the government an offer they couldn’t refuse.”

What exactly was the offer Captain John made? Well beginning this Saturday, Red Hook 1 will be renamed Palm Tree Charters Express. You read that right – Palm Tree Charters has leased one of the ferry boats. How exciting is that?!

“Now this is going to be good. Each Saturday and Sunday, I’m going to offer an express trip over to see Mick and the girls at the Soggy Dollar. Boy oh boy, I can’t wait,” Captain John said.

“The good thing is I can now transport 250 people at a time,” he continued. “The bad thing is that people will have to pack light because there’s barely any luggage space.”

Seriously, I can’t wait for the inaugural trip on Saturday.

Even the folks at the Soggy are excited. Here’s what they had to say Monday:

Trips aboard the Palm Tree Charters Express will depart each Saturday and Sunday from the National Park Dock. The cost is $50 per person roundtrip. You must be 18 and older to ride, so leave those kiddos at home.

What To Do On a Rainy Day in St. John

It rained for days on the island this week, so what exactly do you do when it seems like the sun is never going to return? Well our good friend Captain John over at Palm Tree Charters made this great mobile movie for us showing exactly how some of the locals have been passing the time.
