Power Update!!

Well folks, today is day 51 post-Irma and guess what … we have some power in Cruz Bay!! How exciting is that??!!

Do we wish the whole island had power? Absolutely. But we are super happy with the progress that’s happening. So a HUGE thank you to the crew from BBC Electrical of Joplin, Missouri and WAPA!!

We chatted with a few of the guys from BBC tonight, and they told us that power extended up Centerline Road and all the way up to the clinic. Very exciting stuff! They did say, however, that it will take some time to power up the whole island as they have restrictions with regard to work in the National Park. Some of the new holes for the power polls will have to be dug by hand and that will take some time. They also said that they’ll have to use helicopters to string some lines in certain areas due to the dense forest.

We’ll keep you posted as we learn more. Thanks for reading everyone!

  1. Thank you for keeping us in the loop with all that is being done on st John and surrounding islands. Having never been to st John, (only to st Thomas) and as a follower of your blog for a long time, I’m happy to hear about the progress and to continue reading your posts. I continue to pray for you all. Good bless

  2. This is wonderful news. Thank you for the details such as the difficulties they will face in National Park and getting lines into forest. Really appreciate your continued energetic reporting.

  3. Woo hoo. We r so. Excited. Coming to st john Nov 5. Really good news. Been checking the web every few hours. Thank u Jen for letting us know!!!!!

  4. Using a helicopter – thanks for details like that.Makes you understand why it’s going to take some time to do the entire island. That would seem to be a special skill. Is that going to be done by local power people or do they have to bring in people from the mainland to do that?

  5. Can’t someone contact the NPS to see if they would ease up their restrictions so power poles can be installed as quickly and efficiently as possible? With strictures like that (hand dug) Bordeaux and Coral Bay may be in the dark for months more. Special circumstances call for special procedures!

  6. It was such a beautiful sight to look in on the the Love City STJ webcam last night…and see Cruz Bay ablaze with light! Woohoo!. Comin’ back, baby!
