Hey everyone, it’s October 1st! Rabbit! (How many of you say that on the first of the month like me???) Today marks the first day of registration for those of you off island who plan to participate in next year’s 8 Tuff Miles. Can you believe it’s that time of year again? Neither can I!

Here are the details:

The 2015 8 Tuff Miles race will be held on Saturday, February 28. As always, the race will begin at 7:15 a.m. behind the National Park Visitor’s Center in Cruz Bay. For those of you unfamiliar with 8 Tuff Miles, it’s a pretty intense race that begins and ends at sea level; however runners reach an elevation of 999 feet during the course.

Curious just how tough this course is? Check out this quick video we made last year of most of mile one:

If you live off island, you can register now by clicking this link.

We hear that there is some pretty cool stuff happening at next year’s race. For starters, organizers are planning a kick off event the weekend of February 21-22 that will include an overnight, community-support and family oriented “light up the night” event.  We’ve also heard that there is a pretty major pasta dinner planned for runners the night before the race. It’ll be held at Cruz Bay Landing for $25 per person. There’ll also be a fun recovery party happening on Sunday, March 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Oppenheimer.

So we’re curious… who plans on running next year? Mr. News of St. John plans to sign up for year two and Mini News of St. John plans to run his first race. Me… well, I’ll be cheering you all on on the sidelines. 🙂

On a completely different note…

Does anyone remember what happened on October 1, 2013??? Two words: Government Shutdown. Seriously, how crazy was that? Here’s a little reminder to jog the memories of those of you who may have forgotten…

Lastly, today’s the day that the Coastal Zone Management will announce whether they’ve decided to approve or deny a permit for the proposed Coral Bay marina. We’ll let you know how that turns out as soon as we can. Have a great day everyone!

    • Hi Gram,

My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Sundmacher, in Milford, Connecticut told our class that if it was the first word we said on the first day of the month, we would have good luck for the rest of that month. I’ve said it ever since. 🙂

  1. The 8 Tuff Miles Festival will kick off on Feb 21-22, 2015. The 1st Annual “Light up the Night” starts at 4:00 Pm and is a community supported, family oriented over night event. There will be lots of great music and fun!
The 3 rd Annual 8 Tuff Miles Recovery Party will be held on Sunday, March 1, the day AFTER the 8 Tuff Miles Race.

  2. Thanks for keeping us posted on the meeting tonight. I’m on the edge of my seat.
Ps: I’ve never heard of the “rabbit” thing to start a month. What’s that all about?

    • Hi Lisa!

My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Sundmacher, in Milford, Connecticut told our class that if it was the first word we said on the first day of the month, we would have good luck for the rest of that month. I’ve said it ever since. 🙂

  3. When I was a little girl, my best friend’s mom in our neighborhood taught us to say, “Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit” for good luck on the first of every month! I woke up early this morning to do some things around the house before work…and said, “Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit!”

Can’t wait to hear the outcome of the meeting tonight…thanks for keeping us posted…looking forward to hearing what happens!

Thanks for your great work…it keeps those of us living “outside paradise” drooling! 🙂

  4. Good Morning,
I have always said Rabbit Rabbit on the first of the month…. I too have always thought it a “family thing” until I looked it up last year.

    “From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
“Rabbit rabbit rabbit” is one variant of a common British superstition which states that a person should say or repeat the word “rabbit” or “rabbits”, or “white rabbits”, or some combination of these elements, out loud upon waking (or first moment) on the first day of the month, because doing so will ensure good luck for the duration of that month.”

On the Coral Bay subject…. Praying for a “No”…..

8 Tuff Miles would be way too tuff for me….lol, but always enjoy seeing the results!

  5. I have never done the “rabbit” thing. Couldn’t hurt. Maybe if enough people said it this morning the vote will be to NOT ALLOW the CB marina project.
Though I will never run the 8 Tuff Miles (not a runner) I did enjoy driving on the left with you. It seems so natural to drive on the left.
    Happy October!

    • Done deal, the fix is in. hundreds of pilings, megayachts and private control of the mooring field. Goodbye to a beautiful chapter of life. All to enrich Brion Morrissette, et. al. Disgusting.
