Hello everyone, happy weekend! We went out last Saturday and filmed the following GoPro video for all of you. We started at the Smoothie Stand on Centerline Road (right near Ajax Peak) and drove down to Maho Bay and then up to the overlook. Just to warn you all, some of this video is pretty heartbreaking, especially Maho Bay.
I have been watching the GoPro video and I have to say I now know why Kenny Chesney loves St. John so much, at least visually. Even through the devastation I can see the beauty come shinning through. I hope to one day make the trip to this isla bonita, hang out at The Quiet Mon, and just have no where to go and no where to be.
Thank you, Jenn for keeping us updated. It is heartbreaking for sure but also encouraging to see work being done. We are looking forward to coming back to our love city island, hopefully in the spring.
Xoxo
Well, yes, it was somewhat depressing…but..it looks like Maho is getting lots of attention. Positive thoughts.
Thanks for the Video. The single lane has always been my favorite. Can’t wait to ride through there again. Maho took a hard hit! So sad to see. Hopefully the turtles and thier habitat are ok. Love to see the donkeys. Thanks
Pretty hairy ride in some places. Every time you went under one of those leaning telephone poles, I found myself ducking, LOL! As always, thank you Jenn for showing us the island and all the progress being done. Can’t wait to get back!
Jenn, yes heartbreaking. My Dad used to say nature always found a way to recover after a fire. After a hurricane proves to be a different scenario, but the man-made efforts for recovery are obvious. Maybe there is a creative way to use all that wood for shelters from the sun on the beach. Thank you again for your reporting.
Hard to watch as I did that drive every day after work last March. But necessary to see to prepare for visiting when the time comes. Thanks for these really important videos Jenn.
Hi Jenn,
Wow, thanks for the warning in your headline. Nothing could have prepared me for that! Ugh. It’s always been such a beautiful drive (one of the reasons I love to stay in Coral Bay). The drive to Maho got me more excited to be at the beach. It was like the biggest anticipatory piece of going to Maho. Stopping for a smoothie and then heading down the road to hit the canopy that hung over the one way road. I’m not sure I’ve ever driving that stretch without seeing deer. The canopy doesn’t look like it’s coming back anytime soon. It truly shows what conditions people are working in with no shade.
Wow… just wow.
As always, Jenn… thanks for sharing the reality of life for you right now. That one was unimaginable. Love to you for sharing, love and safety to all the workers who are doing their best to make progress! That area is going to take a while!
Have you seen any chippers on the island that turn all those sticks and down trees to mulch?
Thanks,
Lisa
Looking at how far inland the sand was washed, it really gives you a good sense of how high the storm surge was.
First, Jenn, thank you so very much. We hear very little in the news about the Virgin Islands. We feel as though this is our other home. As hard as it is to see, it is better than not knowing. Thank God, no fatalities, at least none we have heard of. The homes hopefully will all be rebuilt soon, the rest God will take care of!
Jenn I would have to say this site is the only site that I actually believe on what’s happening at St.Johns. A place I love dearly. I am positive all will be well and beautiful again it just takes time. thank you so much for the info and videos. all my friends in the Caribbean have been through a lot this year. But I know you will get through it .
See You All Real Soon !!!
Thank you for theses videos. This one is heartbreaking! Our favorite beach Maho will be forever changed. I know it will come back and cannot wait to spend the afternoon there again.
Wow!! So much progress already! Yes the landscape has changed but in a few years the scars will be overgrown! Thanks for sharing the progress, this is really heartening. One of your first videos showed you couldn’t even get through! Now you can and the cleanup is well underway. Sending happy thoughts your way and dreaming of turtles.
So hard to watch that one. Such a beautiful beach reduced to rubble. The water looked as beautiful as ever though. Glad to see the crews working on it so we can return as soon as humanly possible.
Jenn,
Thanks so much for all you do Jenn and for keeping us all updated. Heartbroken but have faith our island will be restored. Hard to see the devastation. 🙁
Wow, that was heartbreaking. Jenn, we appreciate all of the updates and information that you share with us.
Thank you Jenn for helping us keep connected to our wonderful St. John. It will return!!!!
I’ve been trying to reach Terry Witham and Villa Serenity. Have you any news? Can you make a connection.
