Concordia Remains Up For Sale

view from concordia

Back in September, we told you how “working plans” had been released for a new resort over where Concordia currently resides. Well it appears that the deal may have fallen through.

Stanley Selengut, the man who opened Concordia 24 years ago and Maho Bay Camps nearly 45 years ago, posted a letter to Concordia’s Facebook page yesterday. The letter stated in part that “at this point, a new owner has not materialized.” Concordia then confirmed via the Facebook page that it remains up for sale.

A company called Lavie released a working document last September that detailed how it planned to transform Concordia into a boutique resort that would have been designed around around ecology and wellness. The deal was expected to close last fall; however it never came to fruition.

In the letter Stanley stated that Concordia continued “to maintain the legacy of providing a positive and educational experience for our guests while continuing to pioneer the principles of profitable environmentally sensitive tourism”

Here is Stanley’s letter in its entirety:

Dear Concordia Guests, Past and Future;

Next year, it will be 25 years since I opened Concordia Campgrounds and nearly 45 years since I signed the lease for Maho Bay Camps. Over all that time and for thousands and thousands of guests I have striven with my staff to provide you with a special place to rest the soul, restore the spirit and find out how little you need in life to be truly happy and comfortable. We’ve worked hard to maintain the delicate balance between man and nature by combining the principles of sustainable design and practice with St. John’s abundant natural resources.

It has given me great pleasure and satisfaction over these years to read the thousands of letters from you, our guests, describing just what that experience has been for you and meant to you. I am proud of all we have accomplished in exploring the possibilities and opportunities for living life in harmony with a pristine environment while learning about alternate ways to exist within the natural world.

A few years ago I began to realize that the time had come for me to retire and to pass the legacy and the future efforts at continuing the work at Concordia into younger hands. I promised myself then that I was not going to let Concordia go to just anyone, but would continue to operate the resort while I searched for a capable next owner who understands the importance of what has been created here and would take Concordia into the future. Preserving the environment has always been of utmost importance to me. I want to transfer ownership of Concordia only to someone of like mind who will continue the mission we have started here.

At this point a new owner has not materialized and so we continue to maintain the legacy of providing a positive and educational experience for our guests while continuing to pioneer the principles of profitable environmentally sensitive tourism.

I hope you continue to visit and enjoy Concordia well into the future. I hope you can engage the new owners, when that time comes, and be generous with your constructive feedback as they begin planning for that future, in the same way you have always been generous with me.

And once again, let me say thank you for all the wonderful times over the many years at Maho Bay Camps, Harmony Studios and Concordia Campground.

Sincerely,
Stanley Selengut
