We recently came across a very well-written novel that takes place right here on our island. It’s called Daniel and the Jumbies, and is intended for children around fourth grade and up (in addition to the young at heart).

Daniel and the Jumbies is a fictional middle grade chapter book that playfully uncovers some of the mysteries of the historical folklore of the Caribbean. This story takes readers of all ages on an adventure with a boy named Daniel who was uprooted from his home in the States to a new and unfamiliar place – our island of St. John. As Daniel makes big adjustments, he takes readers on a journey like no other; to our small, unique, and exciting island and into the minds and hearts of the locals who reside here. And on the way, he just might encounter a Jumbie…

Daniel and the Jumbies was written by a beach-lover named Jules, who owns property over in Coral Bay with her family. Jules currently resides with her husband and son on a catamaran on Longboat Key, Florida but frequently visits St. John and refers to it as her “home away from home”.

Daniel and the Jumbies received 4.9 out of 5 stars on Amazon.com and has received rave reviews from children and parents alike. It’s a great book, not only for children to read, but also for parents to read aloud to their little ones.
