St. John Video: Honeymoon Beach

Andrew Burnett is a traveler and photographer.  he’s done a few videos of St. John and this is one of them. The focus is Honeymoon Beach, a short walk from the Caneel Bay Resort.

“Sugary white sands and normally calm waters make Honeymoon the perfect spot for sun seekers and snorkelers alike,” he wrote in this YouTube posting. Produced by Burnett and his Come Out And Play Productions. [email protected]

Four minutes of St. John

BoatOne of our readers, Mark Kichler, spent some time on the island at the end of July.

He took lots of pictures and built a nice slide show using the Animoto service.

It lets you produce professional-looking presentations/.slideshows/animations easily on both your desktop or iPhone.

He sent along a link to his video.  Click to relax.

Thanks, Mark.

The VI’s love turtles

Turtle hatchlings, free at last

Steve Simonsen, the world class St. John photographer, has been working on a documentary about sea turtles.  Here’s a clip of his work-in-progress, showing baby turtles escaping their underwater nest and heading swimming to the future.  It’s wonderful the Virgin islands waters can be a part of this circle of life.

The footage of the baby hatchling leatherback turtles was filmed with a Sony PD 150 and Nite Rider HID 14 W lights. No tripod.

Fireworks on the 5th

The St. John Festival came to loud and colorful end Monday night with fireworks over Cruz Bay harbor. (Click on any of the pictures here to see larger versions.)

BOB_4051 Tropical Focus Photography's Bob Schlesinger
set up a pair of cameras on tripods underneath a deck top get these fantastic shots, (He's good!) a smart move given there was a threat of rain during the day.

Don't you love this shot? Fireworks at the top of a palm tree?

Using two tripods was smart, too, because it let the Virgin Islands photographer keep shooting
despite in-camera processing time after each burst of images.

How to take better photographs

Family-fun St. John is full of wonderful settings for beautiful pictures.  There are so many, in fact, that the St. John Sun Times has even offered a sort of catalog of great places for great shots.  Read it by clicking here http://stjohnsuntimes.com/10_best_photo_spots.

But, once you've found THE spot, there's something else to consider: WHEN to push the shutter.  The variable to be considered here is light.  While some people think light's range is simply dim to bright, to a photographer light is color, impact, and emphasis.

Bob Schlesinger of Tropical Focus knows very well that a scene photographed at 7 a.m. can look entirely different from the same scene at 6 p.m.  And that's good.  It's not a question  of what's right and what's wrong; it's what do you want?

St. John music video on YouTube

Eslpeth_rose The island's multimedia guru, Steve Simonsen, has completed production on a music video featuring the work of a London-based rock group. Elspeth Rose, lead singer for The Awe Kids, asked him to produce the video.

"Elspeth contacted me through Facebook months before her trip," Simonsen said. "She asked if I would help her create a music video."

Her parents and brothers live on St. John. Her mother, Helen Lalich, is an artist (www.heleneltis.com).

The Awe Kids were founded just about a year ago. Within a few weeks, they were playing clubs and heard on the radio.

"Just in it for the Music" is their motto.  All their music  is produced by 19-year-old James Rockhill who also plays keyboards. They are touring the UK now.

Surf’s up

Surf_1 So, while you may have been freezing in the dark along the mid-Atlantic coast over the weekend, some lucky dude was catching the waves.Surf_2

Shelley, a long-time NewsofStJohn.com fan, who also calls herself Island Girl is a frequent island visitor. She snapped these photos at Cinnamon Bay. Some people said the north shore swells were 'awesome.'

Dolphins, Ahoy!

No, not Dolphin Market.  Dolphins.  Like fish.  The real things.

On his blog, Gerry Singer reports a pair of dolphins put on a show for kayakers, swimmers, and boaters near Maho Bay on Saturday.

Gerry was there and, fortunately, had his camera.  See the photos and his post at http://seestjohn.com/st_john_life/life-on-st-john/st-john-virgin-islands-maho-bay-dolphin/
