So You Want to Live On an Island…

women live on rocks

How many of you have ever dreamt about living the island life? Waking up everyday in paradise – sounds pretty amazing, right? Well if this sounds like the life you’d love to live (or perhaps you’re already living your dream), there’s a blog we suggest you check out. It’s called Women Who Live on Rocks and it’s super entertaining.

Women Who Live on Rocks is written by multiple women who live on islands in the Caribbean and also in Central America. They write candidly and provide many interesting and entertaining tidbits about island life. We like the blog so much that we wanted to share it with you.

My favorite entry thus far is about the side effects one has due to living among vacationers. It’s pretty hilarious. Check it out:

Possible Side Effects of Living Among Vacationers

Written by: Chrissann and Ashley

Should you choose to make your home in a picturesque tourist destination such as a Caribbean island, kudos to you! People all around the world spend their days pining away for the one precious week in their year that they get to spend in the place that you so casually wake up to each and every day. Seriously – way to go, You. Your decision-making skills are commendable.

However, one should be aware that this type of lifestyle is unparalleled to the one you gave up in the “real world” in many unexpected ways and is not for everyone.

Possible side effects of Living Amongst Vacationers may include:

side-effects_WWLOR

WEIGHT GAIN

Humans have a tendency to crash diet before vacation (Gotta get bikini ready!) and then splurge once they are actually on said-vacation, devouring gluttonous quantities of decadent foods. Dining with or nearby vacationers can easily derail your healthy eating plans, leading you to jump off the figurative bridge with everyone else and order the french fries, even though you know damn well you are definitely not on vacation yourself.

EXCESSIVE ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

In a place where the rum flows like water, grown adults will decide to consume alcohol in quantities they haven’t tackled since their college days, ordering shots left and right, always ready for another round. This contagious party spirit is sure to loosen what little inhibitions you still possess, causing you to engage in that all-too-familiar thought process of Why the hell not? So what if it is Wednesday… every Wednesday if you’re not careful.

MISGUIDED LONELINESS

All may be well and good in your island life, yet being confronted head-on with the unbridled merriment of the best of friends and jovial families celebrating their annual getaways together every way you turn can cause you to think longingly for your own special people who you are not currently on vacation with. Be especially careful during the holiday months – the uncontrollable shedding of tears in public places will only creep people out.

SCENT-INDUCED MIS-ASSOCIATIONS

You have likely always associated the smell of sunscreen with summertime, vacation, long days at the beach, and fun, in general. Smelling sunscreen-coated tourists will make your nose play tricks on your brain, causing you to believe it is a beach day when it is not. No matter how many times this happens, your brain will always experience that crushing moment of bad news that you, dear one, do not get to go to the beach. This ripping band-aid-like sting does not lessen with time.

FEELING LIKE A FASHION FAILURE

People tend to pack their newest and coolest clothes for their much anticipated vacations. Those actually living on an island deal with the harsh realities of mold, the bleaching sun, and inaccessibility of options that leads to complete wardrobe collapse. You will inevitably be the most unstylish and potentially homeless-looking person on the beach. Get used to it.

MISSING OUT SYNDROME

In the states, you stand in line for coffee with fellow business people who are also on their way to work. In the islands, you will find yourself in line with tourists in swimsuits and beach bags, prepping themselves not for the drudgery of a workday, but for the pure joy of a day by the sea. There will be fun happening all around you, all the time. You can’t always join in and this can suck – majorly.

BEING MISTAKEN AS A STICK IN THE MUD

People who are visiting view their stay on the island as the most exciting time in their year, and therefore, yours too. What they fail to realize is that you just had visitors who believed the exact same thing staying with you last week as well. And two other times the month before that. Literally. So when you’re unable to drop everything, play hooky from work when they want to go boating, and party each night until 2 am, this will result in you being interpreted as a boring, un-fun, down and out, ‘what’s her problem’, stick in the mud.

party-pooper_WWLOR

EAVESDROPPING AGGRAVATION

Sharing all of your public spaces with tourists means overhearing wildly inaccurate conversations, whether you like it or not. Listening to tourists spout out so-called “facts” about the island you live on, the restaurants you frequent, and the life you lead can feel frustrating, particularly if you are a barely controlled, know-it-all type. Your willpower challenge comes in not interjecting with The Truth, as that would force you to reveal yourself as a local, a role you never want to let the tourists in on for fear that they will pummel you with dumb questions, for which there can be no hasty retreat.

IF YOU’RE IN A HURRY, THAT AUTOMATICALLY MAKES YOU AN A–HOLE

With everyone around you fully embracing “island time”, having nothing to accomplish in their day besides marathon daiquiri drinking, those who are trying to get anything done are generally perceived as jerks who don’t know how to relax. It takes considerable restraint to not punch a tourist who chides you to “chill out, man”, as though everyone on the island should just give up all hope for productivity of any kind, so as not to disrupt the tourists’ Caribbean buzz.

GROCERY STORES CAN MAKE YOU AGGRESSIVE

Only on vacation do people make grocery shopping a team sport. Groups of tourists clogging the aisles, debating over a communal market list for their week is tough to take, particularly when your island grocery store’s aisles weren’t designed to accommodate more than one cart at a time in the first place.

LAZINESS AND TEMPORARY LOSS OF LIFE GOALS

When everyone around you seems to be eschewing goal-oriented forward motion for more immediately gratifying pursuits (beer!), it is not uncommon for you to feel a sense of passive permission to do the same and succumb to laziness. It is important to learn the balance between seizing the moment and seizing the day.

lazy-hammock_WWLOR

BLOWN BUDGET

Not only does everything just naturally cost more down here due to the fact that everything is imported, most stores tend to market their goods to the tourists, rather than the locals. It’s a bigger demographic that is usually more frivolous with their moolah, so you will be paying an obscene amount for everything. The plus side is that your initial sticker shock will fade, causing you to believe everywhere else you visit in the world is a “good deal”.

SELF-RIGHTEOUS LOCALISM

Observing the obnoxious behavior of your fellow humans on vacation on your island has made you a more conscientious tourist now when you travel elsewhere, carefully thinking through your questions before you ask them, taking note of cultural proprieties, etc. On the flip side, this can turn you into a more self-righteous local than you intend, becoming overly critical of those doing small things you now consider intolerable in their disrespect such as wearing their swimsuits in public places other than the beach.

There is hope. If you remain highly aware of how Living Amongst Vacationers is affecting your psyche, you can coexist and live a positive, productive, healthy, normal (well, normal-ish) life. Speak to your mental health professional/favorite bartender to see if Living Amongst Vacationers is right for you. 🙂

An Update on the “Save Coral Bay” Campaign

A few weeks back, we told you about a campaign that was created to raise funds to fight the proposed marina in Coral Bay. At the time, the campaign had raised just over $8,000 in about 48 hours. We were pretty impressed.

Well it’s gotten even more impressive. In just 17 days, the Coral Bay Community Council has raised nearly $60,000 to fund its fight against the marina. They’ve also launched a pretty comprehensive website. If you’re at all interested in this proposed marina, I suggest you check it out.

The website’s called Save Coral Bay and you can find it at www.SaveCoralBay.com. It includes all of Summer’s End Group’s documents, including their marketing materials and land and sea permits, as well as a plethora of comments on the possible impacts the marina could have on Coral Bay written by residents, visitors and federal agencies.

Here’s a quick snapshot of the website:

Another little tidbit we found to be interesting and odd at the same time … It appears that Summer’s End Group never purchased its own website domain name. Someone else did. So when you visit www.SummersEndGroup.com, it takes you directly to the Save Coral Bay GoFundMe campaign. I don’t know about all of you, but if I were planning on building a multi-million dollar project, I’d be pretty certain to buy my business’s domain name first.

Halloween is just one week away, so if you haven’t planned your costume yet, get to it! There are a lot of great events happening throughout the island and a bunch of trips, cash prizes and more up for grabs. Let’s get right to it…

The Mongoose Monster Ball

Mongoose Junction is getting into the action this year with its first ever The Mongoose Monster Ball. Here’s what they had to say about it:

“Come by our party first and let us know that you would like to be considered for the Best Costume Prize. We’ll take your picture, get your cell phone number and text you 20 minutes prior to the contest if you are a finalist.  We hope you’ll enjoy yourself with us all night, but if you have made a great effort on the costume and want go go bar hopping Cruz Bay, we get it.”

Judges will choose the finalists. Winners will be chosen by crowd participation. You must be present to win.

So what exactly is up for grabs? How about a weekend trip to Miami for two including airfare and hotel plus more than $600 in gift certifications to a variety of Mongoose Junction retailers. And to make the party even better – Inner Visions will be playing from 9 p.m. to midnight. Sounds like it will be a blast!

They expect competition to be steep and some pretty good prizes will be awarded. Motu will also be debuting the new Patron Incendio.

And a delicious little side note: Motu’s monthly seasonal special is a pumpkin Bushwacker. It’s like a pumpkin pie jumped into your frozen drink .. topped with a bit of cinnamon of course. Yum!

More Accolades For Our Beautiful Slice of Paradise…

It’s pretty safe to say the secret’s out … people near and far officially know that St. John is one of the top spots in the world.

First we had one of sports biggest stars – Mr. Derek Jeter himself (the recently retired Yankees shortstop for you non-sports fans) – pop by for a visit earlier this week. And now we have one of the top travel magazines designating St. John as being on of the top islands in the world – yes in the entire world.

Now think about that for a moment… There are thousands of island worldwide, yet St. John made the list for the best of the best. But it gets better than that – it was ranked as the eighth best island in the world. That’s pretty impressive. Here’s what Conde Nast Traveler had to say about it:

This small isle in the Caribbean Sea hasn’t been overrun by development, thanks to the fact that two-thirds of the landmass is national parkland. It makes an ideal getaway for hikers seeking out jungle trails and snorkelers who’ll nose down over the surrounding reefs. Pro tip: With its shallow, turquoise water and soft sand, St. John’s Trunk Bay is often counted among the finest beaches in the world. Explore the diverse marine life with a snorkeling expedition along the Underwater Trail through a teeming coral reef. Getting there: There are no airports on the island, so boat travel is your main option. Ferries depart from two spots on St. Thomas—Red Hook and Charlotte Amalie—and take 20 to 45 minutes to arrive at Cruz Bay in St. John.

Now I understand that some of you would prefer we kept this secret to ourselves, but we should also be appreciative that we are able to live on and/or visit one of the most beautiful places on earth. Not everyone can say that 🙂

Guess Who’s Bumming Around the Islands Now…

So we’ve been sitting on this one for a few days, but we’ve decided that the time has come to share a little tidbit with you – Guess who’s been bumming around the islands this week??? DEREK JETER!!!

I grew up about an hour or so outside of New York City, so to say that I am a huge Yankees fan is an understatement. Back in 1996 when he was named Rookie of the Year, I skipped school one day and hopped on the train to NYC just to see him (sorry Papa News of St. John!) And on September 28, I made the trek up to Boston to watch his very last at bat ever. I love, love, love Derek Jeter. Why? Because he’s the classiest guy in sports and a fabulous baseball player.

Image taken at Jeter's last game at Fenway
Image taken at Jeter’s last game at Fenway

So the fact that he is around St. John is beyond exciting to me. And the fact that he just retired after the best career in all of sports and decided to visit our little slice of paradise simply makes me smile.

We don’t want to give away too many details because the man deserves his privacy, but we can tell you that he spent some time in the BVIs over the weekend. We’ve also heard that he’s spent a bit of time on St. John. It makes sense seeing that his current girlfriend, Sports Illustrated model Hannah Davis, is originally from St. Thomas. We also know that he’s pretty good friends with a Cruz Bay business owner, so you never know, you just may se him in town.

So if you happen to cross paths with him, maybe just tip your hat if you’re wearing one or simply say thanks. And if you haven’t watched this video yet, check it out. It’s pretty cool … even if you’re a Sox fan 🙂

Taste of St. John Tuesday

Who needs a nice little warm escape today? Who wishes that they were in the Caribbean or maybe on the beach at Maho Bay, as opposed to perhaps an office, a cubicle or wherever you may be? Well today we’ve got a temporary cure for you…

Take a moment to enjoy this oldie but goodie, a slideshow of our 2013 Daily STJ island images. The pics are great on their own, but the slideshow’s even better with the sound on. It’ll make you feel like you’re on island. Who knows, maybe it’ll even inspire you to plan your next trip. Check it out…

Another TV Show Films On Island!

I’m telling you, St. John is truly becoming the place to be! There was yet another television crew filming on island this weekend … how cool is that?! Here are the details…

The show is called Caribbean Life and it airs on HGTV. Caribbean Life follows couples and families who decide to leave the mainland and head to the Caribbean for a fabulous life of sun, sand and Bushwackers. Or perhaps sun, sand and Painkillers… that’s totally your call. 🙂

The TV crew on island this past weekend happened to be following two people we all know and love – Karena and Joe from The Beach Bar. For those of you who don’t know Karena and Joe, they took over The Beach Bar last May along with Karena’s sister Nikki (another lady we absolutely adore on island!!).

Nikki, Joe and Karena

Now we can’t give away too much, but we can tell you that Karena and Joe have been filming since Friday, and from what we’ve heard, their days have been ridiculously long … like 16 hours long. Wow! They filmed around the island and did a few shots at The Beach Bar Sunday afternoon. We hear their episode will run sometime next spring. We’ll keep you all posted on air times.

In the meantime, check out this screen grab we took from The Beach Bar’s webcam yesterday…
