Let’s Talk Trash- Dulce Vita Sails and Get Trashed St. John Coordinate to Clean-Up Brown Bay

Let's Talk Trash- Dulce Vita Sails and Get Trashed St. John Coordinate to Clean-Up Brown Bay 1

Earth Day is this week and, in celebration and recognition of this beautiful place that we love, I’ll be getting into some serious trash talk over the next few days 🙂  Once a month, the local organization, Get Trashed St. John, organizes a volunteer driven trash cleanup at a beach, town, roadway or trail on St. John.  This month, a very special partnership with Dulce Vita Sails allowed twelve volunteers (ages ranging from four to 70!) and two crew members on the sail boat to collect HUNDREDS of pounds of trash from a remote beach, inaccessible by vehicle.  And, some of the “trash” they found had a story to tell.

Breathe It In: USVI Has Some of the Cleanest Air in the World! 4

Good Morning, Good Morning!  I generally start my day by Googling news articles about St. John, Virgin Islands.  Often times, when I am at a loss for a story, this rabbit hole through Google will inspire something and lead me to my next topic.  Well, this morning, I found an interesting article in regards to a world wide air quality study conducted by the World Health Organization.  And, guess what?  Both in the Cities and the Nations and Territories categories, our little slice of heaven down here ranked at the tip top of the lists!

Apartment Fire Leaves Love City Residents in Need 5

Good Morning to you all.  I’m afraid I have some not so great news to share with you today.  Late Sunday night, a fire raged an apartment complex in the Grunwald area, about a mile from Cruz Bay.  According to the release from the Virgin Islands Fire Department, nine apartments were destroyed.  The occupants, St. John community members and workers, all made it out safely but are left with nothing.  Including a roof over their heads.

Good Morning, Good Morning!  A few weeks ago, I posted an update about the future redevelopment of Caneel Bay.  Virgin Islands National Park initially scheduled the public comment period, which began on January 18, to close on February 17.  They announced this week that they would be extending that public comment period for an additional fifteen days to now close on March 4.

Don't Miss Out- Last Chance to Win an All-Inclusive Trip to St. John! 10

Gooooood Morning from St. John!  A few weeks ago I told you about the Love for the Land Fundraiser to benefit the St. John Land Conservancy and I’m so pleased to report today that they are ONLY $12k short of their $50k goal!  And, a lot of those funds raised are due to all of you and your generosity (and desire to win an all-expenses paid trip to St. John!).  With that being said, THANK YOU, and good luck, to all of you who have already purchased your raffle tickets.  And, to those of you who missed the memo, or forgot to grab your tickets, there is a still a little bit of time to do so before Valentine’s Day!

Here, St. John – Stories of People and Place

Here, St. John - Stories of People and Place 11

The story behind this beautiful island did not just begin when the Virgin Islands National Park was founded.  But that is the narrative that is largely presented to new residents and visitors to St. John.  A place that is beloved and coveted by thousands of people all over the world has a much deeper story to tell that is often glazed over by Americanized beach bars and burger joints, beautiful beaches and sunsets and adventurous day trips.  Although, the current picture of St. John looks to be much like that last sentence, the history of St. John, the culture of St. John is very seldom accurately portrayed.  And, in my opinion, the entire kaleidoscope of stories, not just the predominant rose colored lenses, are what makes this place truly magical.
