Well folks, we have great news to share with you this Monday! The concessions are finally going to reopen at Trunk Bay! How wonderful is that??!!
I stopped by Connections this weekend when I noticed an employment sign that stated it was looking “dependable, customer oriented staff” with “a great attitude” to work at the soon-to-be opened concessions at Trunk Bay. The sign stated they are looking to hire people for retail, a food truck and bar-backs.
A few minutes later, I ran into the one and only Ben Cox, who happens to have run the concessions over at Cinnamon Bay prior to the storms. Ben stated that he is helping out with the concessions, and that Trunk Bay will have a food truck that serves both food and beverage. It will also have a small retail shop.
(We previously reported that the retail shop would be located at Cinnamon Bay. We were incorrect. I apologize for the error everyone!)
Redwood Parks still has the concessions contract at both locations for the time being. We’ve heard rumblings that that may change sometime next year.
It is unclear whether Trunk Bay will start charging for entrance once again. The Park has stated previously that it cannot charge currently due to the lack of concessions, so it’s a good bet to think they will resume charging once this reopens. The food truck is expected to reopen sometime next month.
Currently, Honeymoon beach is the only beach that offers food and drink options. As we mentioned last week, Maho Bay will soon have a small food truck and tiki bar.
We will keep you all posted on this. In the meantime, have a great Monday everyone!
December 23rd update: The Trunk Bay beach bar is now offering drinks and snacks. The food truck will reopen next week.
Perhaps parking lot surveillance can be another provided service…seems its needed. But great news about the concessions!
I saw lots of police patrolling the North Shore yesterday.
Just curious – what is happening in the parking lots that warrants surveillance?
Unfortunately we had some break ins over the weekend. The National Park put out a post on Facebook to make people aware. I personally saw the police monitoring the beaches yesterday.
People should never leave anything of value on the beach nor in the cars, at least not in plain view.
Honestly it’d be worth a $5 parking fee at all of the beaches if it were going towards parking lot surveillance. One of the things we’ve always loved about St. John was feeling safe. Perhaps we were just being naïve?
We’re here this week and Honeymoon was awesome… Love that they have the new Bikini’s on the Beach bar and VI Ecotours has all the toys available for rent. Sadly the reefs are still only about 10% of what they were pre-hurricanes. We’re heading out to Trunk and Maho today. I had hoped you were going to say concessions were completely open!
Is there still a food truck over at Hanson Bay?
There is not.
I am truly dismayed to learn of the beach/parking lot break-ins. The sense of peaceful security on St.John was what brought us there and has kept us there for many years. We will be hoping that the police can get this under control. Please do not let a few ruin it for the many who love the island and its people.
It occurred over the weekend and there have not been any other incidents. St. John remains a very safe island.
Speaking of Hansen Bay, the road to the East End – on December 7 – looked like something in a Banana Republic after a civil war. Brush and tall grass encroaching from the shoulders and potholes that could break an axle on rent-a-wrangler. I’ve lived and visited in the USVI for 45 years, and I’ve never seen a major road in this condition. Is the local government out of the road maintenance business or is there a funding problem? And after 16 months, Irma is no excuse.
Only two other vehicles at Hansen on that Friday afternoon less than two weeks ago. No food truck and the local custodians of the parking tip jar were nowhere to be seen. My wife and I decided the water wasn’t nearly inviting as the blistered Shishito peppers, tostones, and a couple of Presidentes at the Longboard……even though it meant a 45-minute drive to Cruz Bay. Excellent decision.
St John Crime – wasn’t there a rash of holdups in Cruz Bay last month??? Unbelievable!!!
A rash? No. There were eight reported break ins at the beach parking areas. And one reported robbery in Cruz Bay.
I hope many take this opportunity to realize that St John is still part of Planet Earth. Things that happen other places happen here too. Where is it a good idea to leave your valuables in a car? Where on earth is absolute safety a certainty? If overgrowth and potholes are the worst thing you have to deal with I would say that is a pretty good day my friend. Anyway, hope everyone has a great holiday. Glad to hear things are moving forward on St John.
Jen, we were there in November soon to be back in March and I was shocked to find out when we went to Trunk that there was no charge……. I think a lot of people would have paid something $2,$5 why didn’t the park collect that ? Put it towards cleanup or something……No?
St Johnians have to say no no NO to any type of crime. Wake up or you will be like St Croix or PR. This is just totally unacceptable and until people have zero tolerance then it will slowly get worse. It’s why people stopped going to many islands along time ago. Places that were beautiful but went out of control with drugs and crime. I’ve been coming to St John for 40 years and it’s our fav place out of them all. It’s not the beaches, it’s the people and the feeling of safety you always have when there.
What type of food/drinks are offered at Trunk Bay? Do they also have beach chair and umbrella rentals or available. Will be there for the first time in two weeks!
