8 Tuff Miles trials begin

Gear-for-saleThe biggest foot race in the Virgin Islands, 8 Tuff Miles, is scheduled for February 27th. The course begins in Cruz Bay and spans the length of the island and ends in Coral Bay.

Peter Alter, the race's founder and organizer, said the West Indies Corp. is again sponsoring the race.  It distributes Gatorade and Aqua Fina water in the Virgin Islands.

As part of the preparations training runs have been scheduled.  These trials are called Geiger Tuff Tune Ups, in memory of a long-time island resident, David Geiger. The first is Saturday morning.  The three-mile jog/run/walk up Centerline Road steps off at Mongoose Junction at 7 a.m.

Last year's race saw 780 runners and walkers cross the finish line.  This year Alter said he is capping race registrations at 1,000.
