The Best Way to Monitor Weather on St. John

August 1 2019 weather
August 1, 2019

Over the past several days, we’ve had a good amount of rain and some wind across the island as a tropical wave passed through the area. There’s another disturbance brewing out in the Atlantic, and it currently has a more than 70 percent chance of “cyclone formation” over the past five days, according to the National Hurricane Center. Now this isn’t something to cancel your trips over, but it is something that we should all keep an eye on. Here are some of the best weather sites to use when looking at weather affecting St. John.

Hurricane Season is June 1st through November 30th, so the National Hurricane Center is the best source of information during these months when it comes to actual tropical weather.

But for day to day weather, the site that I have found most useful over the years is Wunderground. It is also an app you can use on your phone. Wunderground has realtime radar. It also gives you hourly information, and it’s usually spot on.

For those of you who are on Facebook and prefer more local knowledge, I think that St. John VI Weather is the best page to follow. It’s written by Dan Boyd, who lives over on Lovango. (Dan was also heavily involved in repairing the dinghy docks in Cruz Bay. We thank you for that Dan!) Dan posts a report every morning that includes the weather, water conditions, aviation conditions and more. This is a public group that anyone can join. Here’s what Dan had to say this morning about the system that’s brewing out in the Atlantic:

So again, this system is nothing to cancel your trips over, but it is something that we should all keep an eye on.

  1. Another great source we use (we’re in Florida, so we follow storm season pretty closely too) is Mike’s Weather Page (spaghettimodels.com). Pretty good array of info about storm threats from the Caribbean to FL all the way to Hawaii. You can follow it on Facebook too so updates show up in your feed. This is the best Hurricane reference I have found so far.
