Renting a large St John villa for a group vacation

Jan. 15, 2013 — Choosing a villa for a group of 12 is more than just finding 6 bedrooms. You will want to make certain there are plenty of indoor and outdoor spaces to enjoy.

One such villa on St John’s north shore in beautiful uncrowded Catherineberg is Island Stones.  It has a large infinity pool with in water seating and sun shelf, indoor and outdoor bars, a large game room, exercise room, and lots of outdoor spaces to explore and enjoy.   Here is the latest review by guests currently staying at Island Stones put up on the web site:

We have stayed at 4 large villas on St John and Island Stones is the best. It accommodates 13 of us with ease, The decor and furnishings are excellent. The view of the BVIs to the north is spectacular. The infinity pool is beautiful and the spacious deck provides a wonderful vista overlooking the bays and islands. Father Knew Best

Island Stones

I recently arrived at my family’s rental villa, Island Stones (, after being off island for about six months. I was astonished at the amount of new tropical growth since I was last here.

I traveled from my home in Virginia to run a routine maintenance crew, get a little direct face time with the properties and make sure everything is in the best shape for our guests, but I can’t help enjoying Island Stones at the same time.

There are countless varieties of tropical vegetation thriving at our villa and nearly taking the place over, if it wasn’t for our excellent grounds crew.  That’s the beauty of the north shore and especially our location in Catherineberg

After the pleasant surprise from the beautiful new growth, some of which can be seen on our website, I walked up to the pool terrace and for the thousandth time was blown away by the view.

My father bought the property for the view and extensively renovated the house with new bedrooms, a game room, an exercise room, and above all else a gorgeous sun terrace with an infinity edge pool that seems to bring the distant ocean right to your fingertips.

For me, the down island view from this house is the best in the world, and it always excites our guests.  The photos on our website are spectacular but you truly have to be here to experience the magic.

Walk to a St. John beach from your villa

Nov. 26, 2012 — Among the many factors helping to determine which villa to rent is how far are those great St John beaches.

Many vacationers jump into their Jeep and take a ride to a National Park beach.  But what if you want to walk to the beach whether for the exercise or just to avoid the drive.  St John is a small island but with curvy roads and steep hills, what seems like a short distance can be quite a hike.  Here is a sampling of villas that are in close enough proximity to beaches to walk but all have some degree of hiking.

Amorosa Peter Bay This villa is in the National Park and the closest beaches are Peter Bay Beach, Cinnamon Bay Beach, and Trunk Bay Beach.  There is a ten minute stroll down the driveway, across north shore road, and onward to the beach path.  The walk back home is more difficult due to climbing uphill.  You can also walk to Cinnamon from Amorosa in about 15 minutes.  Be careful of traffic along north shore road.

Island Stones Catherineberg  My wife and daughter tell me they walked to Cinnamon in about 20 minutes.  The downhill was the easy part but there are 7 switchbacks going back up John’s Head Rd so be ready for a real workout if you decide to walk to Cinnamon Bay from Island Stones.

Beach Walk & Aussie Suite waterfront Chocolate Hole This is the easy one because you can walk along the rocky shoreline of Chocolate Hole Bay to the beach.  This takes about 5-10 minutes or you can just jump in the water right at the villa and swim, snorkel, or kayak to the beach using our free snorkel gear for guests.  Jump in because the water is crystal clear and the reef is beautiful!  You can also walk to the Westin beach in about 20 minutes.

Casa De Sonadores Virgin Grand Estates  This is a pleasant walk through beautiful Virgin Grand Estates passing along landscaped roads and beautiful villas to the Westin resort.  Perhaps after a nice lunch or cocktail you would enjoy Great Cruz Bay beach.  The walk back is uphill but the roads are a fairly easy hike.  This would be about a 20 minute walk.

Whether you drive or decide to take a short hike or a tough hike, there is always a nearby beach to enjoy.  Check out our villas and St John webcams at

Stories from St. John

Oct. 26, 2012 — Occasionally I travel to St John to help with a few family properties which are available on

The islands never fail for stories back home and anyone you meet down there could talk for hours about the life.

I was on island for a few days recently to make sure a re-roofing of Beach Walk villa went as planned, in addition to inspecting the other villas, and I attempted to hand feed a group of iguanas that roam around the house. Don’t try this by the way!

Beach Walk is my favorite house for simple relaxation because I can hear the ocean literally 20 feet away and jump into one of the kayaks or go snorkeling any time I want.

Anyhow this made it all the more interesting when a friend of mine wanted to stop by an artist’s house that night to pick up a signed print. Much to my surprise the artist’s father was a famous east coast protégé and a blast to say the least! It reminded me of a time I was at the old Stone Terrace restaurant downtown, with less than a dozen people there, and unexpectedly met Cassius Clay doing magic tricks. The guy was still cocky as ever!

I could go on about the interesting people who frequent St. John but the point is you just never know what will happen or who you’ll run into on such a small paradise, so I hope anyone planning a trip gets out there and has some fun! And check out our houses with live web cam views at

Start your day with a Webcam

Oct. 3, 2012 — One of my favorite things to do as soon as I park at my desktop every day is to look at the weather on St John.   No, I don’t go to a weather page.

My homepage has Webcams showing those fabulous St John views we all love so much.

Clicking on the first, It look out to Cinnamon Bay from high above in Catherineberg  This camera is located at ourIsland Stones villa and the view is always wonderful.  I love watching the clouds roll in and the ever changing sky over Cinnamon out to Jost Van Dyke.

Then I click on, looking from the beautiful Amorosa villa in Upper Peter Bay.  It also looks out over Cinnamon past Mary Point and to Jost Van Dyke but has a much closer view of the water.  Often I see a sail boat go by the Tortola ferry.  Watching that camera at home, I can easily ‘hear’ the sounds of the surf just like I hear while staying at Amorosa villa.

How to pack lighter for your vacation

Sept. 3, 2012 — Beach Walk Villa and Aussie Suite announce new kayaks and snorkel gear.

Literally six steps from the warm clear water’s edge of beautiful Chocolate Hole, you can now step over about three or four rocks (to avoid those pesky sea urchins near shore) and launch those kayaks or go snorkeling.

Sometimes you just don’t want to get into that rental car and drive to the beaches or favorite snorkel spot.  Discover the underwater beauty right at your villa.  Kayak all around Chocolate Hole or paddle to the beach for some sunbathing.  Back atBeach Walk and Aussie, lunch and cocktails and a nap in the hammocks will really do the trick for some memorable care free days of relaxation.

No need for that long list of what to bring when you go on your St John snorkel and kayak adventure.  You have it all right at the villa.

Spend more time on the water and less time learning to drive on the left when you come to Beach Walk and/or Aussie Suite

Rented together or separate, this economical property is a very private waterfront acre in which the main upper villa, Beach Walk, has a private entrance and apart from Aussie except for a common parking area.

The lower level suite with private entrance is great for couples that do not need a lot of room but want simple comfort, a/c, kitchenette, 2 bedrooms with 2 full baths, and lots of waterfront fun.
