Earlier this week, I learned that a man who helped St. John so much following the hurricanes last fall was killed while working to help another community. Brian Hughes, a member of the elite Arrowhead Hotshots, was killed while battling a fire near Yosemite National Park last Sunday. Mr. Hughes and the Hotshots were one of the first groups of people who came to St. John’s aid last September.

The Arrowhead Hotshots arrived just days after the storms, according to Christy McManus, social media and web coordinator for the Virgin Islands National Park. “They lived and worked in the worst conditions right along with those of us that chose to stay,” Christy said. “They dug us out so we could get from Cruz Bay all the way to Hurricane Hole.”

According to Christy, the Hotshots cleared more than 26 miles of roads and trails. They also cleared roughly 11 acres of beaches.

“They were instrumental on getting our park back on its feet and making it possible for other teams to follow behind them,” Christy said.

So seeing that we’re known as being Love City, I thought we could extend some love to the family of Mr. Hughes, including his wife who is currently three months pregnant with their first child, and to his fellow Hotshots crew. So please, if you will, leave a note here in the Comments section, or over on our Facebook page, and let them know how much we appreciate them and the work of Mr. Hughes.

And for those of you who are able, a GoFundMe page has been started to help Mr. Hughes’s wife. You can click here to view it.

  20. I was so sorry to hear about this. I have just posted a donation on the GoFundMe account. It is so heartwarming to see how generous people have been.

We live in Wisconsin and have family on St John. Our son was on island for both storms and all the nightmarish aftermath. News of St John was our lifeline for information, since cell service was almost nonexistent. It is a season our family will never forget.

We have the utmost gratitude to the brave and strong helpers who came down and gave their effort so selflessly. All we can do to express our appreciation is to make a contribution in Brian Hughes’s memory. To his family and friends, deepest thanks and sympathy.
