An Update on Customs

waves magnum

Hello everyone and happy Wednesday! I know that many of you have questions about the customs building on St. John and when it will become operational again. Well today, we finally have some answers…

The Virgin Islands Port Authority posted Monday that the customs building in Cruz Bay will be replaced either by or beginning this September. They simply wrote “anticipated September 2018” so that can be interpreted two ways. They also wrote that there will be a temporary customs facility will be constructed inside of the ferry terminal at Red Hook. This facility will remain in use until the building on St. John is rebuilt, it said. The Port Authority hopes to be able to begin processing vessels in Red Hook by May.

Another interesting line in the post states, “The Port authority has also arranged to have U.S. Customs process yachts and other small pleasure vessels at the Victor Sewer Marine Facility (The Creek) on St. John.” So does this mean that customs will return to Cruz Bay sooner than September? Only time will tell, I guess.

America Yacht Harbor also announced that it can process customs in Red Hook. It stated that it is charging $50 for a one-time clearance, or $200 for monthly unlimited clearance. (I assume this is in addition to the actual customs’ fees.) This service is available Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. You must make an appointment in advance, and they are asking that you do so days in advance if possible. To learn more about this option, please email [email protected]

We will let you all know more on this as soon as we all know more. In the meantime, have a wonderful Wednesday!

  1. Good info.

Maybe some temporary structures at The Creek by June while permanent structure get finished, one can hope.

  2. I believe there is a typo in the e-mail address for American Yacht Harbor. It probably should be [email protected].

Thanks for the info! We are planning a charter sailing trip in the BVI for late May/early June (with 3-4 days on St. John afterwards) and really don’t want to have to go to St. Thomas to clear.
