NPS Officially Reopens a Third Beach!

Well folks, we have some great news to start off the week here on St. John. The National Park Service opened yet another beach over the weekend. Trunk Bay has been cleared and cleaned, and is ready to take guests. This brings the total number of beaches that are officially open to three. Hawksnest and Honeymoon were reopened last week.

As you may all remember, Trunk sustained a considerable amount of damage during Hurricane Irma. Since then, crews from Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Grand Teton National Park, Big Bend National Park, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gettysburg National Military Park, Yellowstone National Park and of course the Virgin Islands National Park have been working diligently to clean up the brush and get the area ready for visitors.

Because the entry booth was damaged during the storms, there is currently no charge to get into Trunk Bay.

Our friend Yelena Rogers took the following pictures at Trunk Bay last week. How beautiful does it look??!!

  1. That is truly wonderful news, Jenn! Great way to start the week. Any news of Francis Beach–our favorite–would be really appreciated. Thanks so much as always!

    • Francis isn’t officially open but the road is clear. There is no shade there, so I suggest bringing an umbrella. I was there last weekend, and it was beautiful!

    • Our favorite too and disappointed the shade is gone. But in the scope of events, bringing an umbrella is nominal at this point.

  2. I can’t help but thinking if the Island was called San Juan instead of Saint John, the power and restoration and clean up would have been done by now.

As much as I love the island, have been there at least once a year for 12 years, I feel it’s unsafe – security wise and health wise.

    • Mike, that is not true. St. John is very safe. There are also not any current health concerns on island. People are advised to stay out of the water at some spots.

People are working very hard on the clean up and the linemen are working their tails off.

  3. Wonderful news. Thanks so much for all the updates Jenn. Do you have any sense of when Salt Pond or Lamsur will be open? Are they accessible? We will be in Coral Bay early February and look forward to our return to the island.

  4. So glad to hear this! I visited Trunk Bay Beach way back in 1976 during my first cruise. I can’t swim. But I waded into the warm, clear water until my feet left the sand. A truly memorable, blissfully happy day! God bless all on St. John Island – my idea of paradise!

  5. great news….question ….is it just me or does it look as all of the north shore beaches ( not salmon though ) picked up lots of sand ( i know cinnamon really really needed it )

  6. Great news Jenn!! I watch this site every day for updates, this posting and comments have prompted me to start planning for our return visit. We hope to come down from little ole’ Nova Scotia in April if there is anywhere to stay for 7 – 10 nights. Thank you so much for the updates. God Bless

  7. Thanks so much for the update! I look forward to your posts and seeing how much the island has regrouped!

Question, how can I find out if a beachwe are staying near is safe to swim in; no high counts of E Coli.

  8. Will be there in less than 2 weeks on a cruise. Have made my way to Trunk Bay each time we’ve stopped in St. Thomas and am so happy to hear that it has reopened. Was wondering if any facilities will be open as well? Thanks and keep up the good work!

  9. My husband and I got married in 09 on Trunk Bay. We stayed at Aqua Blu. It was just breathtaking. We fell in love. My husband turns 50 in January and I wanted to bring him back. Was wondering what villas are available if at all????
