Google Street View Coming to St. John … Slowly.

So I was hanging out over at Just Beach at Mongoose Junction yesterday when a representative from Google walked in. We started chatting it up, and he mentioned to me how Google Street View is coming to St. John. So soon (which down here probably means like a year or so), you will be able to drive the streets of St. John from your computer or phone … how fun!

So of course I had a million questions for this poor fella. For starters, the Google car is not ferrying to St. John to record our roads. Darn it! Instead it will be a man with a camera mounted to a helmet wandering around town … now how St. John is that?!

In the meantime though, there are some businesses down here that have signed on for their own kind of Google Street View, and it’s pretty neat. Rather than clicking a point on the map and simply seeing a storefront, you can actually walk into the store and look around. There aren’t many businesses that are currently offering this online, but at least 20 on island are currently in the process of signing on. Here’s how it works:

Go to maps.google.com and type in Cruz Bay or St. John. Pull up the map. Click the little yellow man in the bottom right corner of the map and drag him toward Cruz Bay, for example. You will see orange dots and blue dots. The orange dots are the businesses that have signed up. Drop the little yellow man on it and you will be able to go inside that business. Check it out…

The blue dots are a bit different. They are pictures that people have added to the map. Here’s an example of one placed at the Trunk Bay overlook.

How fun is that?! News you can use today folks. Now go ahead and check it out. 🙂
