Today we’d like to thank all of you – both residents and visitors – for pitching in to help several island causes in need. Last month we told you how a fire ripped through Morgan’s Mango overnight and caused a considerable amount of damage. A GoFundMe campaign was quickly set up and, as of this morning, more than $20,000 has been raised to help with the cleanup and rebuild. That’s pretty amazing.

To give you a brief update, demo continues to be ongoing while the kitchen area has been completely cleaned out. Power is expected to be restored in the front section shortly aka the bar area. No need to worry – as soon as that happens and cold drinks begin to flow once again, we’ll be the first to let you know.

Another GoFundMe campaign that popped up earlier this month and has also received a good amount of support is to help a cause near and dear to my heart – the island’s animals.

Dana Bartlett runs the Carolina Corral over in Coral Bay. We visited the corral last year and went horseback riding with Dana. (Click here to read that story.) Well Dana is looking for help in funding a new vehicle and trailer that will allow her to carry feed and also transport sick and injured animals. As of this morning, nearly $4,000 has been raised. Dana’s goal is $15,000.

We wrote about Dana earlier this year after she rescued and rehabilitated an injured donkey who had a bad hoof injury. This is one of many instances in which Dana has gone out of her way to help the island’s animals. Please click here to read that story. She helps our island, so let’s help her.

And how could we forget the Save Coral Bay GoFundMe campaign. I haven’t checked the numbers in a while and was completely floored when I logged in this morning. As of today, May 26, 2015, the Save Coral Bay fund has raised $97,247. That is absolutely incredible and simply boggles my mind.

So you may be wondering what the latest is on the proposed mega marina in Coral Bay…. The last official update we’ve heard was that several federal agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Marine Fisheries Services and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration all strongly urged the Army Corps of Engineers to deny the marina’s permit. And the rumor per the Coconut Telegraph is that it’s pretty much a done deal, as in not happening. So while we can’t say for sure, all signs seem to be pointing to the fact that there will not be a mega marina in St. John’s future.

So from us here at News of St. John, whether you are a resident, a visitor or someone who simply loves this little slice of heaven of ours, I’d like to thank you for supporting our causes and for helping make St. John a fantastic place to live and visit.

  1. Bravo but stay vigilant on the marina. If we get a Republican White House and full Congress control, the politics will dismantle environmental reviews and protections. It’s happened in the past, let’s keep the pressure on!
