New Restaurant to Open at Wharfside

A new restaurant is set to open in Wharfside Village within the next few weeks, and from what we’ve heard, we think you’re all going to like it.

Construction is currently underway for Vista Mare, a new Italian restaurant that’s taking up residence in the former Spyglass location, which closed last June after owners Brent and Monica Wardlaw decided to leave island. Vista Mare means “sea view” in Italian and the restaurant will have just that – a great view of Cruz Bay and out to St. Thomas.

According to Mike Hedy, the manager of Vista Mare and also Joe’s Rum Hut, the restaurant will be casual and approachable, not fine dining. Seth Bettinger will be Vista Mare’s chef and is currently creating its menu. Seth spent the past eight years working as the chef for Waterfront Bistro. Seth’s menu will consist of homestyle Italian like what your grandmother would make, Mike said. It’ll also be on the lighter side as opposed to traditional heavy Italian fare.

In terms of the space, a new bar is being built that will face the water to take advantage of the great views. The seating area is also being built out and will accommodate roughly 80 people once complete. The bar will accommodate 18.

Vista Mare will be open daily for dinner initially. Lunch service will begin in January. We’ll let you know an approximate opening date as it nears. In the meantime, here are a few more pics…
